The Rameshwar Prem Foundation pays respectful homage to Teejan Bai, the legendary Pandavani artist whose contribution to Indian folk performance remains an important part of India’s cultural memory.
Teejan Bai, born on 8 August 1956 in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh, was one of India’s greatest folk artists and the most celebrated exponent of Pandavani, the traditional storytelling art based on episodes from the Mahabharata. She passed away in Raipur on 5 July 2026 after a prolonged illness.
Her life was full of struggle, courage and commitment. Coming from a rural background, she faced many social and personal difficulties, but her deep love for Pandavani gave her strength. With her powerful voice, expressive gestures and dramatic stage presence, she transformed a folk form into a nationally and internationally respected performance tradition.
Teejan Bai’s art was not only singing; it was theatre, narration, music and memory together. She carried the stories of the Mahabharata with energy, emotion and dignity. Through her performances, she gave Chhattisgarh’s folk culture a strong identity before audiences across India and the world.
For her extraordinary contribution, she received several major honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, along with other cultural awards.
